Peaches, Figs, Cherries, and Impatience

I meant to clean up the yard. I really did. But, then, the nursery is just so close… IT’S SO CLOSE!!!

Right, so now we have an Oregon Prolific fig and an Oregon Curl Free peach tree. I liked that they both said Oregon. Must be good. Immediately stuck them in the ground in the dogyard.

Now, though, I read that figs really should be grown in a concrete trench or a container. It seems that their roots will extend out up to 3X the width of their canopy, which can get to 15 feet.

So, I think I’ll pull it and stick it in a big ol’ pot. I have one that some bamboo is in right now, and I’m tired of looking at that sad pair of sticks. I’ll go buy myself some bamboo. In the meantime, I’ll plop the fig in their and put it on the deck. Apparently, the root restriction does wonders for keeping the size down and improving fruiting.

On a differnt topic, here’s why people wait a season after they buy a house. We went to the nursery, and I bought Lily of the Valley for wifey. Thing is, we’ve got gobs of it popping up under the mahonia in front. I bought astilbe for a pot near the hottub. It can’t be more than 10 feet from a 5′x5′ square of the stuff coming up in the yard. I plunked down the (silly) prices that Bosky Dell charges for natives for some trillium. Wasn’t too long before I heard the popping sound of great oodles of them showing up in a couple of different beds. OK, they don’t pop.

The yard looks like it snowed because of all of the cherry petals falling from the world’s biggest weed in the backyard. Have to imagine that some of those blossoms made their way to my Rainier.
