Oy… catch up

I need to jot some thoughts down while I fix this thing:

- Planted a bunch of winter crops (broccoli, cabbage, chard, onions, pak choi, napa cabbage, and cauliflower) in some of the open beds about, let’s say two weeks ago… a week?… whatever.)
- There’s still lots of food out there. I keep feeling like it’s empty, but a friend came by a couple of days ago and asked for some veggies. I ended up giving her a grocery bag full of tomatillos, eggplant, squash, kale, and tomatoes. Last night, we decided to eat out of the garden again and had fried green tomatoes and greens– chard, kale, turnip– and cheesy squash.
- Got the parts for the greenhouse glazing. Makes all the difference in keeping the panels flat. It’s a little silly that I have to drill holes in the frame to secure them.
- Went to look at polycarbonate panels for cold frames– ala Elliot Coleman’s “Dutch” style. At $89/each, I’m not sure I’ll be doing that. A guy’s gotta draw the line somewhere. Yeah, I’ll probably do it anyway.
- Threw a bunch of crimson clover on the ground all over the place. Seems to be germinating.

Finally, I’m facing the annual (more or less constant, really) dilemma of what to do with all my compost. I’ve got piles forming everywhere, and now the leaves are falling. I may end up exporting some of that stuff just due to lack of places to pile it up. I really hate to do that.

OK, sorry, more pictures later. Just didn’t want to forget to note some of the goings on.

I bet you could post something on Craigslist about compost to give away, and land-poor Portlandites would beat a path to your door. Just make sure they take squash with them.

Sweet, two comments. I always liked you best, Kelly.

The point is, though, that I don’t WANT to give away all that luscious organic material. I just gotta be inventive about where and how to pile it without obligating myself to marriage counseling. You’d have to meet my wife to understand what I mean.
