C-c-cold…

Two things to report: it’s NOT spring and the flicker still lives here.

Everything is good and frozen out there today (after noon). The good news is that the greenhouse is relatively warm and cozy (in the 50s) and the rain barrel hasn’t frozen. The bad news is that it’s very, very cold out there.

The flicker who took up residence in my custom-built “stop carving holes in my house” house is still there. I was out wandering the yard this morning, and saw someone stick their head out of the hole in the house. Apparently, when they’re home on days like today, they like to keep it low key. If I hadn’t seem him, I’d have assumed that thing was empty.

Was just out walking around again, and I had the thought that I should note my spraying that I just did a couple of days ago. It was a pretty nice day, and I’d missed out on my earlier planned spraying, so I gave everybody a shot of sulfur and dormant oil. Peach leaf curl and its kind are pretty bad here because of all the rain. The dormant oil is prophylactic, as they say. Pretty good balance of predators and pests in the yard, so nothing (except the cruciferous aphids) get too out of hand.

Also, I’m fighting the urge to order a bunch of stuff to jam in the ground while it’s still dormant season. I’m having a hard time imagining where else I have room for another tree or shrub. At last count, I’ve planted 15 or so fruit trees, depending who you count (Pomegranate? In Oregon? Doubt it.)

  1. Nichols Plum
  2. Oregon Curl-free Peach
  3. Ubileen Pear
  4. Asian Pear (Shinseiki, Nijiseiki, Chojuro family tree)
  5. Loquat
  6. Oregon Prolific Fig
  7. Cornus Mas (Cornelian Cherry)
  8. Northern Spy Apple
  9. Honeycrisp Apple
  10. Leikora Sea Buckthorn
  11. Illinois Everbearing Mulberry
  12. Rainier Cherry
  13. Stella Cherry
  14. Jiro Persimmon
  15. Autumn Rose Peach
  16. Negronne Fig
  17. Golden Delicious, Gravenstein, Akane Apple

Then there’s 25 or so Blueberry, 5 Evergreen Huckleberry, 2 Scarlet Goumi, 2 Nero Aronia, 2 fruiting Honeysuckle, 2 types Raspberries, 2 Venus Grapes, 1 Van Buren Grape (I think), 2 types Akebia, 3 Rhubarb, 1 buttload Strawberries, 1 Fuzzy Kiwi, 1 Ken’s Red Kiwi, 1 Arctic Kiwi, 1 Issai Kiwi, 2 Pineapple Guava… and… currants, 3 Cascade Red, 1 Clove Black Currant, 1 Highbush Cranberry Viburnum.

I think that’s it.
Hm. Maybe we don’t need any more.

How do you like the Negronne fig? I just got a small plant for Xmas, and I’m very excited about the possibility, even though it currently looks like a twig stuck in a bucket.

Mine is a twig stuck in the dirt.

I got it from Territorial, and it taught me a little lesson about ordering stuff what ain’t seeds from a company with “seeds” in the name.

Still, looks OK. Survived the year– partially in a pot being resented and partially in the ground after I’d come to accept it. It’s only about 18″ tall at this point.
