They pull me back in!

So, my yard’s full, right? No more fruit trees. Easy enough. Just don’t buy anymore, right?

But what if a friend’s brother owns a nursery, and he’s got too many bare-root trees? He’s just going to throw them out. Nooooo!

So, I just planted a family cherry, a family apple, and a mystery Asian pear. Given the windfall nature of these guys, they are going to pay the price for a home with some intensified training. The cherry’s going against the new fence in back, the apple’s against the chicken coop, and Asian pear is next to the driveway, where there is no room for an Asian pear. They’re all going to get the daylights espaliered out of them to fit into their spots.

That makes:

  • 2 plums
  • 4 apples
  • 2 peaches
  • 3 cherries
  • 2 Asian pears
  • 2 European pears
  • 1 persimmon
  • 1 yuzu

I actually don’t have high hopes for the Asian pear’s survival– the trees were dropped off bare-root, dry, and leafed out. That’s gotta be the worst possible combination. I soaked them for a couple of hours in water and seaweed extract before planting them. The apple and cherry looked reasonably alert. The pear was pretty wilty still.

I shall report back with results.
