Pre-pre-spring Pictures

There hasn’t been much in the way of pictures of Ye Olde Urban Hayeseede’s Farme, so here ya go:

Gratuitous Flower ShotAbout the only thing coming up reliably are the crocuses.  Croci.  Croakeye.

Gratuitous Flower Shot 2Dang, them’s perty croakesuss.

Gratuitous Flower Shot 3OK, OK, I’m done.

The Clampett's YardThe farm looks like it was designed by Jed Clampett.  My neighbors must love me this time of year.

Tiny GreenhouseUnder the hillbilly wrapping, my spinach, lettuce, mizuna, and arugula are coming up nicely.

Larger GreenhouseThe scene in the greenhouse, which lives in full view in my driveway (they LOVE me), isn’t much better.  It’s getting a little crowded in there.  Note to self: get bigger greenhouse.

Aw, baby plants! The baby plants are cute, though.  Yes, you are.  Yes, you are.

Fuki! And since my carpal tunnels are beginning to bother me, we’ll end with these guys.  Any idea what they are?  C’mon.  Guess.

That’s RIGHT!  Fuki!  This is the flower, and afterward, it will grow several feet tall, and the stalk is used in Japanese cooking.  They also contain petasitenine which is carcinogenic as all get out when stuffed into rats.  I don’t know if the preparation removes all of that (it’s usually blanched), but I eat it.  It’s actually not that interesting, truth be told.

OK, there ya go.  Things are picking up.

  • I love your photos. Your Clampett yard looks normal to me. Guess that makes me a hillbilly too, huh?

I have “greenhouse envy”, by the way. Did you build that from a kit or was it your own design?

  • Cool pics. Is your chicken run open at the top, below the roof?
I don’t see “Clampett” at all…I see “sleeping” and “possibility”. It’s very pretty. You have a good set-up.

    Good morning ladies,

I appreciate both of you seeing past my cousin-licking, banjo-picking backwater junkyard to a vision of seasonally appropriate, dormant verdure.

Jen, it was a kit. It was a pain in the butt. It is of poor quality and inadequate. That said, it beats a sharp stick in the eye. I’d be happy to spew forth on the ups and downs of it if you’re interested.

DJIceDanniDuke, yes, ma’am. The “henhouse” is built like a bomb shelter, and the run is sort of half-coop, half-run. I have to close it off now because Foony (the magical appearing chicken) can fly. I haven’t done that yet because if she stays inside, they still gang up on her.

Anyway, no problems with anyone going in the run during the day (hawks can’t navigate the opening), and they all march into the bomb shelter at night. I’ve seen evidence of ‘coons in there at night, but I double-dare them to get that thing open.

No, seriously, bring it. What’s the matter? Scared?

    Sissies.
